  i posted this elsewhere, but wanted to create a thread about this specifically.

  here is one way that i think the wt is absolutely wrong in it's advice on raising children:.

  in the 1/13 awake they talk about mistakes that parents make with their children.

  Along those lines, I grew up with HORRIBLE self esteem. My parents were not abusive and my family was somewhat happy in many ways. But I was not praised for my accomplishments. There was little to no acknowledgement when I brought home A's on my report card. There was some praise here and there, but not much. I'm not sure if that is what led to my lack of self esteem or not. High school was torture for me. I was a loner type and was constantly picked on. I don't even like remembering high school.

  In inner-city Sydney there were a large proportion of window cleaners and general cleaners in the congregation, compared to other congregations I'd known.

  They tried to talk me into doing it, but as a single adult female I didn't see the point of giving up a good paying office job to work long hours in all types of weather, with no holiday or sick pay.

  Why did Whitney leave for work 15 minutes early for a 4 minute drive?

  Like most good employees, she liked to be punctual. Being a customer service job she would have to make sure her uniform is right, personal grooming done and ready to work by the time her starting time for work began.

  Why did Whitney agree to give Holt a ride when being seen alone around town with a married man would be cause for scrutiny and a possible investigation by the local body of elders of Jehovah's Witnesses?

  Not necessarily. Not all congregations hold their members to that kind of scrutiny. It may have been a common thing for the two couples to give each other rides.

  Why did Jonathan Holt's wife Amanda delete her Facebook page within hours of Whitney's disappearance. Why is Amanda Holt in seclusion and unwilling to shed light upon this haneous crime?

  Are you really that stupid? She's staying OUT OF THE MEDIA SPOTLIGHT. There's been no comment made that indicates she's hindering the police's investigations or that she's involved somehow.

  How can anyone really be a 100% confident atheist given the paranormal and occult?

  i don't believe the bible is inerrant nor do i hold a 'christian worldview' any longer as my profile details say (which i am unable to update on my profile), but i just can't see how anyone can be absolutely 100% confident there is nothing out there we can call a 'god' or spirit creature in the face of endless first-hand accounts of paranormal and occult experiences that felt as 'real' to the person who experienced them as anything else in their lives.. there are untold reports of ghosts, faith-healing, ouija boards, seances, spirit mediums, stigmata, mystical born-again experiences, speaking in tongues, and then there's hypnotism, ufo sightings, poltergeists, remote viewing, etc, etc.

  ok, so its mostly only anecdotal evidence, but the amount of it is so overwhelming it is practically corroborating evidence.

  in the face of all this, how can anyone categorically assert that there is nothing out there that is beyond ourselves that we might call a 'god' or spirit creature?

  I used to collect stamps and coins when I was a kid. Now I collect bills.

  I also collect frequent flyer points. I love to travel! I am also currently doing some family tree research and hopefully will be able to soon combine both when I travel to the Greek island my great-grandfather came from!

  I agree with you re mental illness. I read these posts with sadness, not humour, although I'm sure some of the situations were those you'd have to have a giggle over afterwards.

  The JWs were very desperate to be able to count hours and publications, so they had easy prey with these mentally disturbed ones. However, these people may had been ridiculed and ignored in normal life so it was perhaps the only time in their life that they had some kindness and attention given to them.
